Our very own Mike Mictlan is going to be playing the annual West Bank Music Festival this Saturday, August 17th. 30 bands and 10 stages for only $5. This day is always great. Mike will be playing direct support to Brother Ali on the main stage at 8PM. If you’re anywhere near the Twin Cities, you definitely don’t want to miss this.
Mike recently sat down with the festival organizers for an interview about what the West Bank means to him and what people can expect from the show. Favorite quote: “I will be doing my entire 3.5 hour set from the confines of a 700-gallon dunk tank wrapped in chains and 2 strait-jackets.” So there’s that. Read the whole interview HERE and check out all the details for the festival right HERE.
Speaking of sweet festivals, the whole crew played Summer Set last weekend out in Somerset, WI (I know you can appreciate what they did there), and had a blast. Dessa snapped this picture of The Men of Doomtree right before we hit the stage.
And here’s one that Papes got from the stage, during the first song as people were starting to fill in from the hill. Note the inflatable Shamu to the left. Sure.
Penny tagged along too for her first festival experience. Here she is chilling backstage, totally being that guy. She must have heard about the free nachos you get when you wear the band’s shirt to their concert.
Aaaaaaand here she is about 15 minutes after our set, passed out in the car. Pretty sure we blew her mind, we were that good. Thanks to everyone at Summer Set for having us. That was a lot of fun.
It’s a slow news week over here, so I’m just gonna jump right into Bonus Album Jam territory and call it a day. Last week Stones Throw released a new collaborative album between synth-funk/R&B wizard Dam Funk and Steve Arrington (lead singer from LEGENDARY 70’s/80’s funk band Slave) that is completely and totally awesome. I’ve gotten into Slave more and more over the last couple years, and I had zero idea that this new record was in the works. Such an amazing surprise. Here’s an interview with Dam Funk where he breaks down Slave’s Showtime album (THE BEST) and what it was like to work with Steve on this project. Check it out.
What I really love about this new record is that it actually sounds new. It’s not just some reinterpretation of an old Slave album. It has this throwback feel but exists in a very current place, plus both these guys switch stuff up constantly. For some reason it also makes me really want to pull out that slept on 213 album from like 10 yeas ago. Truly perfect end of summer riding around with the windows down music. I have a feeling this might still be playing in the Camry when the time comes to send it off to the junkyard. Here are a couple tracks from the project that Stones Throw put up on YouTube to give you an idea of what they’re working with.
So good. Cannot recommend this one enough. You can currently get it digitally from iTunes right HERE. The physical version will be dropping in the fall. While we’re at it, here are a couple of my favorite Slave songs off of that Showtime album (also highly recommended), just to tie everything up real nice and continue my flawless segue streak one week further. You can grab Showtime right HERE.
OK, that about does it for today’s post. I’ll leave you with a couple Bonus Penny Pics to wrap it all up. Here she is at the park with my mom. Possibly the happiest person who has ever tried to bite into a rock with their teeth.
And here’s a picture that Astronautalis grabbed when he was over last week. Pretty accurate depiction of a day in the life over at Doomtree Headquarters. My one handed typing skills are through the roof these days. Considering entering a competition.
Alright, I hope you all have a wonderful week. See you next Tuesday for sure!
